European Parliament Dinner and Reflection

BRUSSELS 2 May 2007 - Presenting practical questions on migration and development today for reflection and discussion from a global perspective.

For the first time, the world is seeing a global mutuality between what nations need and what migrants need. The traditional “push-pull” analysis of migration is still important, but it is no longer the controlling dynamic. Suddenly it is much more a dynamic of mutual need, primarily economic, and specifically of migrant labour.

In order to match migration in ways that match current realities, there is a clear need for a comprehensive approach, including increasing legal channels of migration.  Similiarly, there is a distinct need to target development to reduce forced migration.  As civil society, governments and international institutions consider whether is it time for a new social contract, enumerating migrant rights and obligations, ICMC underscores the mutual practicality of sensible migration and development policies.
