ICMC-UNHCR Resettlement Deployment SchemeSince 1998, ICMC has been working in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to provide durable solutions for refugees in the form of resettlement in a new home country. With a roster of more than 300 skilled professionals, the UNHCR-ICMC Resettlement Deployment Scheme plays a vital role in tangibly increasing the number of vulnerable refugees who are identified and referred for resettlement to third countries. Commonly known as ‘deployees’, skilled ICMC professionals from a variety of backgrounds work directly with refugee protection operations in the “field”, providing support to UNHCR offices throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East in their efforts to properly identify and refer refugees for resettlement. 2011 marked yet another successful year, as ICMC deployees working in UNHCR offices interviewed and assessed more than 65,300 refugees globally, nearly 45,500 of whom were subsequently referred for resettlement. Upon completion of their assignment, deployees return to their home communities or NGOs and are able to use their new experiences and insights to increase awareness of international resettlement work, including the participation of NGOs and governments in UNHCR operations.
