Woodstock Theological Center Reflection on Migration

ICMC Head of Policy, John Bingham, considers where and how the Catholic Church enters--or should enter--the global discussion and action on international migration, especially with regard to gaps in response.

ICMC recognises four current gaps in the world's response to international migration, including stateless and internally displaced persons (IDPs), special populations with exceptional vulnerability (e.g. trafficked persons, migrants in transit peril and irregular migrants), labour migration and making sense and progress out of the links between migration and development.

Across each of these gaps, the Church has been active in providing leadership and vision, especially as it relates to:

  • the human dignity of the migrant and his or her labour
  • the fundamental rights and obligations of migrants
  • the importance of family
  • the need to address the root causes of migration
  • and the need for development that is fully human (among other things, social and cultural as well as economic)
