UNHCR International Conference on Humanitarian Needs of Iraqis

GENEVA 17 April 2007 - Prepared on the ocassion of the International Conference convened by the UN Refugee Agency to address the humanitarian needs of refugees and internally displaced persons inside Iraq and in neighbouring countries.

Representing a worldwide network of members active in migration and refugee-related work, ICMC recalls the paramount need to create conditions that will enable displaced persons to return in dignity to Iraq.  Humanitarian action is an essential part of a comprehensive political solution, and ICMC applauds States that have opened their borders for those fleeing from conflict, funded emergency and life support services for displaced Iraqis throughout the region, and those that have begun welcoming asylum seekers and refugees for resettlement.

ICMC urges still greater burden-sharing to deal with the current situation, including especially the increased support and possibility of humanitarian services to those displaced, and ensured access to asylum and resettlement processes.
