Asian Church leaders join to address the challenges of migration in and from Asia

TAIWAN, 27 June 2012 - Representatives from national Bishops Conferences in Asia and Johan Ketelers, Secretary General of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), gathered in Taiwan from 24 to 27 June, where they deliberated collaborative approaches to migration and the specific needs of migrant workers in and from Asia.

The meeting of the ICMC Asia Working Group, a joint venture of the Office of Human Development of the Federation of the Asian Bishops Conferences (OHD-FABC) and the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), mainly focused on the very often dramatic situation of migrant workers and pastoral implications in responding to their specific needs.

Hosted by the Chinese Regional Bishops’ Conference of Taiwan, the meeting was opened by John Hung Shan-Chuan, Archbishop of Taipei, who highlighted the growing numbers of migrant workers of and the “complex pastoral issues that are emerging mainly in the fields of human trafficking, employment and alimentation, religious freedom, divorce and children’s education.”

At the close of the consultation, the participants expressed their concerns and recommendations in a final statement, highlighting some of the hardships of migrant workers and their families and calling for strengthened collaboration of the Church in Asia in order to ensure their social and individual protection.
