GFMD Civil Society Days

“Somebody said that everything that could be said has already been said. That might be very true, but not everything has been done and that is why civil society need to organize, organize, organize” - participant, CSD 2011.

The Final Report of the GFMD Civil Society Days 2011< Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is now available. The Final Report provides an overview of the activities and outcomes of the GFMD CSD 2011, including a summary of the opening plenary, all working sessions, the final civil society statement presented to the governments in their opening plenary, the Common Space with governments and a set of 17 recommendations made by civil society.

Among the recommendations:

As in previous years the predominant emphasis of civil society continues to be on the rights of migrants and their families for the well-being of migrants, their communities and states and the empowerment of migrants/diaspora for development.

A number of areas have outcomes within direct reach, in particular: better regulating and monitoring of recruitment and employment practices of migrants; cooperation on piloting mechanisms for labour and skills matching; and securing rapid ratifications of the new ILO Convention on Domestic Workers.

The Final Report also includes feedback from an evaluation survey that all CSD participants were invited to fill out; 70 responses were received.
