GENEVA, 5 June 2014 (ICMC) - John Bingham, ICMC Head of Policy, spoke today at the UN on the leadership role of the International Labour Migration (ILO) in promoting fair migration governance and coordinating with civil society.

He welcomed the focus of the new ILO report, entitled 'Fair Migration: Setting an ILO Agenda'. He cautioned, however, that the multilateral system will only be well-equipped if ILO fully performs its role within the system. This role must be a mix of both leadership and collaboration. Or as Bingham further explained, we need "better coordination and harmonization between origin and destination countries to ensure fair recruitment practices, we real access to procedural justice and remedies."

Both the ILO and The International Organization for Migration (IOM) have made significant progress on this type of collaboration, but ICMC believes such cooperation - in particular with civil society - can only be enhanced.
