New appointment consolidates relationship between Pontifical Council for Migrants and ICMC    GENEVA, 19 May 2011—Testimony to the importance of consolidated cooperation on migration issues, Pope Benedict XVI has nominated ICMC Secretary General, Johan Ketelers, as a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People. “The International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) has been working in close collaboration with the Pontifical Council for the last years”, noted Ketelers upon acceptance of the nomination. “We are very pleased with this relationship, and with the understanding that this nomination is a clear invitation to pursue continued and enhanced collaboration on behalf of all those who are on the road, whether forced or by choice”. Established by Pope John Paul II in 1988, the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People is dedicated to the spiritual welfare and special needs of those who have been forced to leave their native land, or those who do not have one. Led by President H.E. Archbishop Antonio Veglió, the Council focuses on priority areas in human mobility as defined in article 149 of the Pastor Bonus. The Council has long been involved with the Governing Committee of ICMC; the appointment of an ICMC representative to Pontifical Council will positively contribute to intensified exchanges on the global challenges and opportunities presented by migration today.
