AMMAN, November 2010—On Saturday, 4 December 2010, disadvantaged Jordanian and refugee families in Amman will be gathering to enjoy a thanksgiving lunch that will provide a unique opportunity for children to play freely, and for adults to relax, socialize and take their minds off their daily struggles.

The event is being organized by ICMC, in cooperation with volunteers from the Jordanian Dozan wa Awtar choir, who will perform a short concert of Arabic and Western songs and will conduct musical education activities with the participants' children. Families will be offered a full meal, and will be presented with a package containing dry and canned foods and school supplies.

ICMC staff conceived of this idea in the process of personal visits to beneficiary families, many of whom live in inadequate and cramped housing in poor areas of Amman, where they are isolated from their neighbors and their children do not have a safe spaces to play. These families told ICMC that they crave normal social interaction that does not dwell on their needs or their suffering and that allows them to recapture some sense of normalcy in their lives.

By gathering to enjoy a meal together, it is hoped that families will be able to immerse themselves in an environment where their children can play freely and learn through musical activities, handicrafts and story telling. Similarly, the adults will be able to relax and socialize with each other and take their minds of their daily struggles.

A donation of about 70 USD will be able to fund transportation, lunch and the food and school supply package for one entire family, consisting of around 6 individuals. ICMC is hoping to reach between 10 and 30 families with this event. While ICMC is actively undertaking private fundraising in Jordan, more funds are needed to ensure that as many families as possible can participate. If you or someone you know who like to support this initiative, please use the donate button provided below to make a financial contribution. All funds received will be used exclusively for the lunch event.
