Pope Francis visits Lampedusa in solidarity with migrants and residents

GENEVA, 8 July 2013 (ICMC) - Pope Francis today visits the Italian island of Lampedusa to bring attention to the “global indifference” to the plight of the many migrants lost at sea trying to reach Europe through one of its primary entry points from Africa.

EU not doing enough for Syrian refugees, NGOs say

International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), Amnesty International, and Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe (CCME), and the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) urged the European Union to step up its efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Syria.

In particular they asked that EU members allow entry and grant international protection to Syrian asylum seekers, increase funding of the UN Syria Regional Response Plan, expand programs for Syrian and third-country refugee resettlement, and support the neighbouring countries receiving these refugees.

Voices of hope: A young family

A newborn baby is the center of attention in Kamal's* family. The baby boy, Marwan*, was born in September with jaundice and received needed medical care through the ICMC-Caritas project. Thankfully, he has recovered and now yawns sleepily in his mother’s arms.

The peeling walls and cold cement floor of their one-bedroom apartment in Abu Alanda, in southern Amman, offer few comforts to the young family of seven. The family also suffered the loss of a child earlier this year to a neurological condition.Read more<
