ICMC has been assisting Burmese refugees in Malaysia since 2010. ICMC has been providing activities geared to prevent and combat Gender Based Violence (GBV) and to offer emergency protection and assistance to GBV survivors in Kuala Lumpur, the Klang Valley and surrounding areas.
Through the generous financial support of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (BPRM) and in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), together with local NGOs including the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO),) we conduct sessions to disseminate GBV training to communities, and provide peer counselling services for survivors of GBV.
Through its local partners, WAO as well as the Pusat Kebajikan Good Shepherd (PKGS), ICMC provides increased shelter capacity, emergency health care and auxiliary services such as interpretation, transportation and psycho-social support for survivors of GBV.
ICMC’s efforts to support urban refugees in Kuala Lumpur include the creation of a Refugee Women’s Protection Corps (RWPC), which continues operating the GBV hotline. ICMC further conducts child protection trainings – and a dedicated training for teachers - at refugee community schools and refugee youth organizations with the support/cooperation of the Women’s Centre for Change (WCC) and Childline Malaysia – a project by the Malaysian Children TV Programme Foundation.
Finally, ICMC continues to award Mini Grants in the amount of USD 4, 000 for community based solutions on GBV issues provision of technical support needed to realize the proposals. To date, ICMC is providing technical assistance on the preparation of project proposals to two refugee community organizations that would address GBV in their communities in a targeted and sustainable manner.
